Toledo: Abstracting El Greco (2015) is a series of conceptual abstract paintings in acrylic and oil on canvas as a form of a contemporary abstract translations of 16-century masterpieces by the Spanish Renaissance artist El Greco.
My work overall is concerned with mechanisms and processes of translation, and I believe El Greco's highly dramatic and expressionist works lend themselves to translation into the language of contemporary abstract painting. Furthermore, as somebody originating from the ancient lands of Byzantium and now living in Asia, I can find personal resonances with El Greco's life as an emigrant from Crete to first Venice and then Spain, as well as between his crossover of Byzantine fresco painting and the Grande Maniera on one hand and the diasporic asthetics of my own painting style merging Western and Eastern influences on the other.
